Non-Human Player Characters


While most characters are humans, Minted in Blood presents two non-human options for players. These can present unique stories, a roleplaying challenge, or interesting character connections to add depth to your game. Here is an excerpt from the character creation chapter.

Character Option: Non-Humans
Characters in Minted in Blood are assumed to be humans. There are some rare examples of sapient non-humans in the world that could be good options for player characters who want to do something different. Keep in mind, these beings are rare, and in the case of awakened MARAs, quite unique.
Awakened MARA
To play an awakened MARA, first decide what your original purpose was, and whether or not you still fulfill that purpose. The mines of Delphindor have by far the highest number of automatons in service at any given time, but there are also lumber bots in the forests of Hilonia, messenger bots that go from town to town, and defensive bots guarding city gates.
Awakened MARAs have archetypes like any other character. Their MEC provides them with magical energy and their awakened nature means they have one foot in the spirit world, and as such they are able to weave magic just as well as humans. Aristocrats and officers may not quite fit as written, but they can be rethemed if that’s the archetype you would like for your character.
Reactions to awakened MARAs will vary wildly from region to region, and even from person to person. One in the company of humans won’t draw too much attention unless it starts making conversation on its own, at which point it could be seen as a curiosity, a friend, or a threat.
Crow-Touched
When creating a crow-touched, the most important thing to decide is the event that caused your spirit to awaken your innate potential. This is often tragic, and can shape how your character moves forward with life. Are they heartbroken by a loss, and have trouble smiling again? Or were they emboldened by a sense of duty that gives them a skip in their step?
Other than this life changing event, crow-touched are just like any other humans. They have families and lives, and choose an archetype as normal. They may be more likely to become a Magiturge or Spiritualist than other humans, but there’s nothing forcing them to do so.
